Methods & sources

Bz: North–south part of the solar wind's magnetic field. Sustained southward (negative) Bz lets energy into Earth's magnetic field — helpful, but never a guarantee of aurora.
L1: A point ~1.5 million km toward the Sun where NOAA's spacecraft measure the solar wind before it reaches Earth.
Newell coupling: A relative index of how strongly the solar wind is driving Earth's magnetic field right now, from speed and field direction. Not a probability.
OVATION: NOAA's short-term model of where aurora may be overhead about 30–90 minutes ahead. Shown as NOAA output only and never extended past its valid time.
Kp: A planet-wide index of geomagnetic activity in 3-hour blocks (0–9). A regional indicator, not a prediction for one place or minute.
